How I see sleep: The sleep puzzle

I like to view sleep as a complex puzzle, with each child having their own unique pieces.

When sleep is hard, there’s a reason. Usually one or more pieces of the puzzle are missing or out of place, and understanding why gives us the foundation we need to support your child well. So before we change anything, we start with the why. Every puzzle is different, so two children with the exact same struggle can need completely different things.

The pieces I look at

Your child’s body
🔵 Underlying medical conditions: we assess for anything underlying that may be affecting sleep, like reflux, allergies, nutrient deficiencies, or breathing concerns, and refer out to the right professionals, such as doctors, IBCLCs, bodyworkers, allergists and ENTs.

🔵 Developmental stage: leaps, new skills, separation anxiety and big milestones all show up in sleep.

Who your child is
🔵 Temperament and personality: some children are easygoing, some are intense, some are slow to warm up. An approach that works beautifully for one child can completely backfire with another.

🔵 Sensory requirements: some children need more movement, pressure or calm to settle, and some get overstimulated more easily.

How sleep is happening right now
This is where we optimize sleep through sleep science.

🔵Individual sleep needs and biological rhythms: how much sleep your child’s body actually needs in 24 hours, and whether their day supports their natural sleep pressure and circadian rhythm. When the timing lines up with their biology, falling asleep and staying asleep get so much easier.

🔵 How your child falls asleep: healthy, restorative sleep comes from a foundation of calm. Most babies, and even toddlers, need help to fall asleep and stay asleep. So we’re not looking at removing support or forcing independence. Instead, we focus on supporting your child’s calm in a way that feels sustainable for your family.

🔵 Daytime and sleep routines: the rhythm of your child’s day and the routines leading into naps and bedtime, and how predictable and settling they feel for your child.

The world around them

🔵 Home life and sleep environment: what your days look like, how sleep is supported during the day, and the sleep space itself.

🔵 Connection and regulation: your child’s relationship with you and how their nervous system is supported toward calm, both during the day and at sleep times. Children borrow calm from the adults they trust, so this connection is a big part of how sleep improves.

🔵 Parental wellbeing: how you’re doing matters. Your rest, your capacity and your mental health are part of the plan too.

Two pieces that shape almost every plan

Sleep needs: finding your child’s rhythm
Understanding your child’s individual sleep needs is often a huge part of our work together. Every child needs a different amount of sleep in 24 hours. We’re not trying to get your child on a rigid schedule. Instead, we find a rhythm that gives them the amount of sleep their body actually needs, with day and night sleep balanced and spread throughout the day in a way that works for them. When that balance is right, it encourages easier bedtimes and longer stretches of sleep.

Temperament: who your child is
Temperament doesn’t just affect how your child sleeps. It shapes what they need to sleep well, how their day can be tailored to support their sleep, and how they’ll respond to the changes we make. A highly alert, sensitive child might need a calmer lead-up to sleep and smaller, slower steps, while a more easygoing child may adjust quickly. Knowing your child’s temperament helps us choose the right changes and the right pace from the start.

When working with a family, I thoroughly examine their child’s characteristics and sleep patterns before addressing any of these puzzle pieces. Each puzzle is unique, so my recommendations for each family will differ based on their child’s individual needs. For some children, addressing underlying medical conditions may be crucial, while for others, sensory needs or temperament might be key.

My recommendations may include adjustments to any of these pieces, but that doesn’t mean changing everything at once. We focus on clear, practical changes that will make the biggest difference for your child, at a pace that works for your family, building step by step toward your sleep goals. We build on what’s already working for you, so you’re never starting from scratch.

Every change is talked through together and tailored to your family and your individual child, so your plan fits your real life and feels sustainable to keep up.    Holistic baby and toddler sleep support means understanding the unique child in front of me, figuring out what their puzzle looks like, and identifying the missing or misaligned pieces that need adjusting, so the whole family can get more rest and feel well.

There is plenty of free content online, but sometimes you need someone to help you cut through the fluff, to reassure you about what's normal, empower you with responsive, and evidenced based sleep solutions tailored to your unique family and child.

With 1:1 support you’ll receive personalized expert advice and guidance to improve sleep, your confidence and feel supported in trusting your instincts

What responsive support looks like here

No crying alone, and no limits on how you respond

Your child will never be left to cry alone, and I will never tell you to limit how you respond to them. I don’t use sleep training methods of any kind. That includes cry it out, Ferber, intermittent soothing, the chair method, shush pat, and pick up put down. Your support is never held back or put on a timer. You respond to your child whenever they need you, and that responsiveness is part of the plan.  If you’ve tried any of these before, there’s no judgment here. So many parents find me after something didn’t feel right for their family, or after a method worked for a while and then stopped. Whatever brought you here, you haven’t ruined anything or set your child back. We start from where you are today and build from there.

Gradual changes, real results

The shifts we make might feel subtle or gradual, but we’re still making real changes, and they lead to real improvements in sleep. Instead of asking your child to fit into one generic sleep method, we create an approach that works for who they are and what they need.

Will there be tears?

Sometimes, yes. Change is hard, and babies are allowed to feel mad, sad or frustrated about it. The difference in my approach is that your child is never asked to feel those big feelings on their own. They feel them with you right there, close and calm, borrowing your calm through coregulation while they adapt.  You’ll feel equipped to support any tears in a way that feels right to you. And you will never, ever be told to push through beyond what feels right to you or beyond your child’s capacity.

Let’s make sleep feel better.

You can feel rested. You can feel confident.

You can show up for your child without sacrificing yourself.
You don’t need to figure this all out alone.
You don’t need to start from scratch, or give up what’s already working.
We’ll build on what you’ve got, work with your child, not against them, and create more calm and consistency at bedtime, during naps, and overnight.

It’s support that meets you where you’re at.
So you can feel good about how your child sleeps and how you’re supporting them.

What other parents are saying...

You got questions, I got answers

I work with families who have children from newborn to age 4.

Change takes time, and it depends on your child. I never guarantee a quick fix. Progress isn’t only measured in hours of sleep. It often shows up as shorter bedtimes, fewer battles, easier resettling, longer stretches, and you feeling more confident about what to do next.

Sometimes sleep improves quickly, within a week or two. Bigger changes, like night weaning, changing how or where your child falls asleep, or bringing in a new caregiver, can take more time. It depends on your child and their big picture, but it does get better. Every plan is designed to guide you through to your goals, and follow-up support is available for ongoing guidance and troubleshooting along the way.

Every family has unique goals and challenges, so if you don’t see your specific challenge here, that doesn’t mean I can’t help!  If you have questions my DMs (@raisedtoflourish) or email inbox (hava@raisedtoflourish.com) are always open.

I can support your family with,

✔ Education about normal infant and toddler sleep and realistic expectations
✔ Difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep
✔ Extended night wakings
✔ Feeling overwhelmed with sleep
✔ Parental exhaustion
✔ Frequent night waking
✔ Fighting sleep
✔ Challenging naps
✔ Nap transitions
✔ Split nights (awake for extended periods in the middle of the night)
✔ False starts (wakes 45 minutes after bedtime or multiple times in the first 2-4 hours of the night)
✔ Early morning rises (waking for the day before 6 AM or earlier than you’d like)
✔ Changing sleep associations/soothing strategies
✔ Sleep space transitions (moving to their own room, or from bedsharing/contact napping to solo sleep)
✔ Childcare transitions
✔ Bedtime battles
✔ Involving your partner or support person in sleep routines
✔ Night weaning after 12 months

No. Your child will never be left to cry alone, and you’ll never be asked to delay or limit how you respond. If there are tears during a change, your child feels them in your arms, with you close and calm.

Only if that’s your goal. We build on what’s already working for your family. If you do want to make a change, like moving to solo naps or night weaning, we’ll do it gradually and in a way that respects your child’s needs and your values.

I’ll absolutely help you work toward better nights, with realistic expectations along the way.

Night wakes for food and comfort are normal and expected throughout the entire first year and beyond. Some little ones are wired to wake more frequently and seek out their caregiver, and that isn’t necessarily something we can, or should try to, stop.

Realistically, the baseline for many little ones is waking anywhere from 0-3 or 4 times a night. Some will average lower and others will wake more often, and this usually decreases throughout their second year.

We can do everything possible to set your child up for their best sleep. But sleep is naturally variable and affected by so many things outside of our control. So our work together centres on using sleep science to best support your child’s sleep, working with who they are as little people and their temperament, and supporting your own wellbeing, completely apart from how your little one sleeps, to maximize your rest. That might look like sharing night duty with a partner, or finding ways to protect your own sleep.

If your little one is waking very frequently, or the wakes are very long and hard to resettle, that usually means there’s a lot of room for us to improve things. Better nights might look like fewer wakes, shorter wakes, easier resettling, a longer first stretch of sleep, or a later morning wake. For so many families, once wakes are shorter and easier, nights feel far more manageable, even with a wake or two.

But I will never guarantee sleeping through the night, especially for little ones in their first year.

All calls are virtual, so I can work with families wherever they are. I’m in Central Time (CST), and I can usually accommodate morning, afternoon or early evening call times.

Yes, absolutely, and I encourage it! When everyone who supports your child’s sleep hears the plan together, it’s so much easier to stay on the same page.

No, I don’t use sleep training in my approach.  Sleep training is a behaviour-based approach. It changes how a child communicates their needs to their caregiver, instead of changing sleep itself. This includes full extinction (“cry it out”), timed or incremental soothing, and “parent present” methods like the chair method or pick up put down.

Nothing in my 1:1 support limits how you respond to your child’s cries, whether that’s in timed increments or by only responding in certain ways.

Instead, we take a holistic look at everything that may be affecting your child’s sleep, so we can address the root cause and work toward your goals.

That includes:
✔ Sleep environment
✔ Routines and rhythms
✔ Day and night sleep balance
✔ Feeding and nutrition
✔ Underlying medical concerns
✔ Sleep science
✔ Emotional wellbeing
✔ Family dynamics and relationships
✔ And more!

We pair all of that with developmentally appropriate expectations and strategies to support your wellbeing as a parent. The goal is for you to feel empowered and confident supporting your child to their best sleep, with solutions you can feel good about.

Most babies (and even toddlers!) need some level of support to fall asleep, and that’s normal and expected. For young babies, and even many toddlers, falling asleep with zero support often isn’t a realistic expectation. Depending on their temperament, some children need more support and some prefer more space. Your child doesn’t have to fall asleep without you in order to sleep well. Feeding, rocking, bouncing, holding or cuddling your child to sleep are all normal, healthy ways to support them.

When we support our children to sleep, we help them:

✔ Enter sleep in a calm, rest and digest state, by lending them our adult nervous system
✔ Connect sleep with feelings of safety and comfort
✔ Build a healthy foundation for sleep as they grow

If parts of how you’re supporting sleep aren’t sustainable for you anymore, we can change them. Maybe it’s taking a really long time for your child to fall asleep, or bouncing on a yoga ball is hurting your back. We can shift the parts that no longer work for your family, like moving from bouncing to holding or from feeding to cuddling to sleep, while still meeting your child’s need for your presence to feel calm and safe.

If falling asleep more independently is a future goal, I’ll absolutely give you the tools and strategies to work toward it. That work needs to be aligned with who your child is, where they are developmentally, and what they need to feel calm and safe. It’s a gradual process, and not a linear one. There may be steps forward, steps back, and pauses along the way, and that’s all part of it.

Because of this, if fully independent sleep is your primary goal right now, I don’t recommend working with me.
My focus is on supporting your child’s calm and finding a balance that works for your whole family, with independence growing over time as your child is ready.

In short, I believe there’s a better way to improve sleep for the whole family. It honours your child’s emotional and physical needs and supports their attachment to you.  Sleep is a biological function, so it can’t be taught like a skill. Sleep training methods don’t teach a child to sleep, connect sleep cycles or self soothe. What they change is how a child communicates with their caregivers when they wake.

Sleep is a vulnerable state for all of us, and even more so for our children. It’s so important that they go to sleep from a place of calm and connection with you. Independence grows out of connection and attachment, while sleep training relies on separation and limiting your response to change sleep behaviour.  Sleep training also goes against your instincts. We’re biologically wired to feel activated when our little ones cry for us, and they depend on us for calm, safety and security.

Babies are designed to wake at night and communicate their needs, and it matters that they can trust us to respond. Even while we’re making changes, supporting their emotions is a big part of their emotional and psychological development.  I believe children need responsive, nurturing care both day and night, and that there’s a way to maximize your rest while honouring your child’s needs. That means improving sleep in a way that respects biological norms, keeps expectations realistic, and addresses the root of sleep disruptions.

Instead of focusing only on sleep behaviour, I take a holistic look at everything influencing your child’s sleep. Every strategy is rooted in responsive, attachment-focused care. It’s designed to get to the root of sleep challenges and give you the tools to make changes that fit your child and your values.

You are the expert on your child. My job is to guide you, offer suggestions and strategies, shine a light on any areas of concern, recommend solutions based on my experience, and support you along the way.

My approach is built on developmentally appropriate expectations and current research in neuroscience, brain development and attachment. There are no generic or arbitrary rules. Everything is tailored to your family.

The assessment gives me a complete picture of everything influencing your child’s sleep, so I can offer suggestions and strategies that fit your family and support your goals.

I assess:
✔   Family lifestyle
✔   Temperament
✔   Your wellbeing
✔   Birth experience
✔   Sleep environment
✔   Nutrition and feeding, including one day of feeding logs
✔   Screening for underlying medical conditions that may be impacting sleep quality
✔   Routines
✔   Soothing strategies
✔   Daytime stimulation
✔   3-day sleep log so I can understand current sleep rhythms and your child’s unique sleep needs.

Yes, completely custom to your goals and your family. Your plan is delivered after our first call, so we can talk through what will work best for your family before anything is written down. You won’t get a generic 10 step program or a strict plan you have to stick to. Your plan is a clear resource to guide you forward.

It reflects everything we discuss on the call, laid out so it’s easy to put into practice at your own pace. I offer suggestions, and you decide what’s the right fit for your family and child. You know your child best, and there’s no single path to better sleep.

Babies aren’t developmentally able to calm themselves from a state of stress without a caregiver’s support. So the idea that they learn to “self soothe” by being left to cry or separated from you is a myth. Babies learn to self soothe by first BEING soothed.

That ability is built on your child’s experience of you responding to their distress in a timely, sensitive and consistent way, which is also the foundation of a secure attachment. They learn it as they come to trust that you’re there whenever they need you, and that you understand their cues.

When we meet our children’s stress with calm, responsive care, we help their nervous system settle. That builds the connections in their brain that support regulation in the future. Children learn to regulate by borrowing our calm, mature adult brain through coregulation. After thousands of experiences of being soothed, their brain slowly develops the ability to do it themselves. This happens through development and can’t be taught as a skill.

So when your child calls for you, you can respond with confidence, knowing you’re setting them up for their best chance at healthy regulation in the future.

I’ll never promise that your child will sleep 12 hours without calling for you in 12 days, or make any claim like that. (So many of those promises are made for marketing, not reality!)

Your child is unique, and babies and toddlers are whole humans with complex needs, many of which are outside our control. Keeping expectations developmentally appropriate is so important, because when your child has a need, they need to be able to trust you to respond. Guarantees about another human only set parents up for unrealistic expectations.

What I do guarantee is that you’ll walk away feeling confident about working toward your sleep goals in a way that aligns with your values, so you can stress less and get the rest you need.

Part of my process is screening for red flags. If something needs a closer look, I’ll tell you and refer you to the right professional, such as your doctor, an IBCLC, a bodyworker, an allergist or an ENT.

They probably will, because your child is growing! Follow-up calls are there to troubleshoot and adjust your plan, and your resource library access never expires.
